Garbage Disposal Unit (Tips).

As with all things in the domestic plumbing world, there is generally nothing that is bullet proof and some stage in its life it will fail. A garbage disposal unit is no exception, so here are some reasons for failing and some remedies:
1). Loading the unit with too much waste too fast.
2). Running little or no water when operating.
3). Non food items dropped or allowed to find their way into the disposal.
4). Bones from meat or even fish and corncobs fed into a garbage disposal causes malfunctions and clogging.

Unclog the GDU:
1). Isolate the power for the unit by either removing the fuse or switching off the MCB for the unit. Do not put your hand in the disposal, even if the power is off.
2). Visually check for any foreign objects that can cause problems and if something is blocking, then, you could use pliers to reach in and remove.
3). Switch the power back on and reset any safety cut outs. A Roehampton Plumber can unblock and service a GD unit.

GDU still clogged:
1). Once again isolate and then insert a long rod, or a broom handle and dislodge to help discharge. Move the impeller in the unit and confirm it is free to move. The impeller is the blade(s) that spins really quick to mash the waste products for the unit to drain away.
2). If the Impeller moves freely, turn back on and functionally test the unit for correct operation.
Cleaning solutions or agents should not be used in the unit as they will corrode the parts of the unit and can also cause damage and injury if discharged from the unit.

A professional plumbing service such as Roehampton Plumbers will fix your GD and advise on maintenance. Sometimes, a fresh lemon cut in half, put in the GD once every couple of months can have a deodorising effect. The fresh lemony smell will make a big difference.
